/mtd-gr-25-m.jpg "The images of the Virgin and the archangel Gabriel, depicted in a soft and delicate manner, are distinguished by the beauty and spirituality of their faces. The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Samtidigt var Hovhannes inte helt fri från den gamla traditionens konventioner; en realistisk återgivning av en naken kropp var fortfarande bortom hans förmåga och behandlingen av vissa kompositionella detaljer återstod rätt schematiska, om inte naiva.")

Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

The difference in the size of the figures is due to the artist's attempt to discriminate between the characters in terms of their relative importance, and has nothing to do with the spatial approach or perspective. Such a naive gradation of figures makes the composition of the scene seem somewhat schematic, in contrast to the figures themselves, treated in an almost realistic manner.<br>The palette of the artist is rich and brilliant, consisting of subtle shades of pink, violet, light green, golden or brown, combined with occasional bright touches of dark blue, red and gold. The magnificence of colour is supported by the beauty of the filigree ornamentation of the framing, whose floral design incorporates representations of twenty-two prophets, displaying a variety of both facial types and attitudes.�")

The Virgin and St. John are represented as two almost identical figures: both their dress and their attitudes are alike. At the same time their symmetrical positions on either side of the Cross and the dark colour of their garments, which sets them off emphatically against the neutral background, contribute to the atmosphere of grave solemnity created by the miniature.�Enligt en historisk ikonografisk tradition är Kristus kropp på korset sträckt (utan böjda knän) och hans huvud är endast något lutande åt ena sidan. /mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The representation of St. Prochoros is likewise rather unusual - he is shown not as a youth, but as a middle-aged man with a beard and moustache. On the whole, Khatcher's miniatures are remarkable for the intensity of facial expressions, unusual compositional treatment and characteristic colouring.�I enlighet med den dåtida vaspourakanska traditionen som skiljde sig från kanoniska scheman, har konstnären avbildad S:t John lutande på sin stav. The restrained colour range is based on a combination of red (the prevalent colour), blue and gold. The treatment of details demonstrates the perfect taste of the illuminator. He supplements the intricate ornamental patterns with numerous figures of birds (cocks, hoopoes, etc.) and gives the columns' capitals the shape of ox or lion heads. Both the birds and the animal heads, despite their apparent naturalism, have a purely decorative colouring.�Konstnären ger företräde till storskaliga element och design och kolumnerna hos hans khoran är kortare än vanligt. Den begränsade färgpaletten är baserad på en kombination av rött (den dominerande färgen), blått och guld. Behandlingen av detaljer demonstrerar den perfekta smaken hos konstnären. Han kompletterar det invecklade dekorativa mönstret med flera figurer av fåglar (tuppar, härfåglar etc.) och ger kolumnernas kapitäl formen av en oxes eller ett lejons huvud. Både fåglarnas och djurens huvud, trots deras uppebara naturalism, har en ren dekorativ färgsättning.")

The Matenadaran collection includes thirteen manuscripts illuminated by Zachariah Aghtamartsi between 1354 and 1403. The design of the book is unusual for the Armenian illuminated manuscripts in that the miniatures are incorporated into the text, sometimes taking up more than a half of the page.�Matenadarans samling omfattar tretton manuskrip illustrerade av Zachariah Aghtamartsi, mellan 1354 och 1403.
