The large-scale figure of the seated Virgin tends to fill the entire page. The deep, dark colours of her robes make a striking contrast with the pale pink tone of the background, so that the latter acquires a light airiness, in spite of the intricate ornamentation patterns.<br>This type of representation - a full-face frontal view of the Virgin and Child - was frequent in early Christian art and can be found in many Armenian wall reliefs of the fourth to seventh centuries.�Miniatyren visar den monumentala kavaliteten som är typisk för många scener i manuskriptet (jmfr. Bebådelsen s. 25). Den stora figuren av den sittande Jungfrun tenderar att fylla hela sidan. De djupa mörka färgerna hos hennes skrud skapar en slående kontrast mot den bleka rosa ronen i bakgrunden, så att den senare får en lätt tunnhet, trots de invecklade utsmyckningsmönstren. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. /mtd-cil-129-m.jpg "The miniature conveys a feeling of anxiety and apprehension as reflected in the gestures of the archangel, in the general rhythm of forms, and in the spatial arrangement and colouring. The latter is rich and varied, and the colours are applied in a carpet-like fashion, leaving very little room for gold. Even though the paint layer is not in a very good state of preservation, most of the blues being altogether lost, the colouring of the miniature retains its expressiveness. As elsewhere in this manuscript, the artist uses here his favourite quiet reddish tints, effectively set off by occasional patches of dark red. In so far as iconography is concerned the miniature deviates in some ways from traditional models. Thus, the scroll of parchment in the archangel's hand (instead of the more customary staff) and the crown on the Virgin's head are unusual for Armenian Gospel manuscripts and are due, according to S. Der Nersessian, to the influence of Western European art.�Miniatyren förmedlar en känsla av ångest och ängslan som reflekteras i ärkeängelns kroppshållning, i formernas allmänna rytm och i det spatiall arrangemanget och färgsättningen. Den senare är rik och variernade och färgerna är applicerade i ett mattliknande sätt och lämnar väldigt litet utrymme för guld. Även om färglagret inte är i så gott skick, det mesta av den blåa färgen borta, bibehåller färgsättningen hos miniatyren sin uttryckfullhet. Så som andra platser, använder konstnären här sin favorit, mjuka röda toner, effektivt framhävt av enstaka bitar av mörkröd. Vad det beträffar ikonografin, skiljer sig miniatyren i vissa ställen från det traditionella modellerna. Därmed, är rullen av pergament i ärkeängelns hand (istället för mer förekommande staven) och kronan på Jungfruns huvud är ovanliga för armeniska evangeliemanuskript och är, enligt S. Der Nersessian, på grund av inflytande från västerländsk konst.")

The full-length representation in an upright attitude is apparently derived from the Byzantine tradition of portraying saints, while the ornamentation of the wide frame surrounding the figure reflects a typically Oriental taste for excessive decoration. The frame, apart from its purely decorative role, performs the important function of creating a visual link between the human figure and the marginal decor of the page, thus uniting the pictorial and decorative principles of illumination. The skilfully applied shading enabled the artist to achieve perfection in the rendering of facial expression.�")

/mtd-cil-89-m.jpg "The portrait displays the most characteristic features of the medieval approach: the strictly frontal view of the figure, the rigid, erect attitude, the conventional position of the arms and, finally, the schematic treatment of the face which is almost utterly devoid of any portrait characteristics. The only element which imparts a certain measure of realism to the miniature is the Prince's dress imitating the traditional attire of Armenian kings, with regard to its general design and colour. Similar representations of the royal garments, accurately conveying the precious, richly ornamented material of which they were made, frequently occur in Armenian miniatures and wall paintings from the tenth century onwards.�Porträttet visar det mest karaktäristiska tännetecknet hos den medeltida stilen: den strikta frontvyn hos figuren, den rigida resta attityden, den konventionella positionen hos armar och slutligen den schematiska behandlingen av ansiktet som är nästan ytterst utan några som helst portsättkaraktärer. /mtd-gr-77-m.jpg "The only unusual feature of this otherwise iconographically conventional composition is the round ornamental table which serves as a symbol of The Last Supper. Introducing this symbol, the artist followed the well-known medieval practice of combining two motifs expressing the same general idea in one composition. Furthermore, one of the related motifs could be used as a substitute for another.<br>In this manuscript, as in many other Armenian illuminated books, ornamental decor occupies a prominent position: every miniature in the volume is surrounded by a framework of varied decorative patterns.�Det enda ovanliga draget hos denna i överigt ikonografisk konventionella komposition är dess runda utsmyckning som tjänar som en symbol för den sista nattvarden. Genom introduceringen av denna symbol följde konstnären den välkända medeltida vanan att kombinera två motiv som uttrycker en generell idé i en och samma komposition. Dessutom kan det ena av de inkluderade motiven användas som en ersättning för det andra. I detta manuskript, som i många andra armeniska illustrerade böcker, upptar utsmyckningen en viktig plats: varje miniatyr i volymen är omgiven av ett ramverk av olika dekorativa mönster.")
