As a rule, the Gospel episodes are represented by fragments or key symbols corresponding to certain scenes or motifs. Thus, a chalice symbolizes the Baptism, a shepherd blowing a pipe - the Nativity, etc. The Entry into Jerusalem is one of the few scenes presented in greater detail than the rest. The miniature is placed in the right outer margin, elements of the composition intruding between the lines. The whole page thus creates an impression of compositional integrity, in which the text and the illustration naturally supplement and visually support each other.�Flera marginalillustrationer i manuskriptet kompenserar för avsaknanden av hisidiga illustrerade miniatyrer. Som regel är evengeliernas episoder representerade av fragment eller nyckelsymboler som motsvarar vissa scener eller motiv. Därför betyder en kalk dopet, ett herde som blåser på ett rör - Jesu födelse etc. Intåget till Jerusalem är en av de få scener som finns presenterad i större deltaj än resten. Miniatyren är placerad i den högra yttre marginalen, element hos den komposition som tränger mellan linjerna. Hela sidan skapar därför ett intryck av kompositionell integritet, i vilket texten och illustrationen naturligt kompletterar och visuellt stödjer varandra.")

The full-length representation in an upright attitude is apparently derived from the Byzantine tradition of portraying saints, while the ornamentation of the wide frame surrounding the figure reflects a typically Oriental taste for excessive decoration. The frame, apart from its purely decorative role, performs the important function of creating a visual link between the human figure and the marginal decor of the page, thus uniting the pictorial and decorative principles of illumination. The skilfully applied shading enabled the artist to achieve perfection in the rendering of facial expression.�")

The figures of the Evangelists strike by the magnificence of their rich attire. In accordance with the Cilician tradition which obviously was known to the Crimean master, St. Luke is represented with St.Theophilos.<br>Besides his own contribution to the illustrative cycle, the artist did some careful renewing of the miniatures by his predecessor from Bologna.�Miniatyren porudcerades i Krim av en mästare vars konst är anmärkningsvärt för dess rafinering och skicklighet hos modelleringen av ansikten och för dess mjukhet och delikatessen hos hans palett. Evageliefigurerna är slående i deras magnifika rika klädsel. I enlighet med den kilikiska traditionen som uppenbarligen var känd för den krimiska mästaren, är S:t Lukas representerad med S:t Theophilus. Förutom sitt eget bidrag till den illustrativa cirkeln, har konstnären gjort några försiktiga förnyanden i miniatyrerna skapade av hans föregångare i Bologna.")

The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.

/mtd-cil-89-m.jpg "The portrait displays the most characteristic features of the medieval approach: the strictly frontal view of the figure, the rigid, erect attitude, the conventional position of the arms and, finally, the schematic treatment of the face which is almost utterly devoid of any portrait characteristics. The only element which imparts a certain measure of realism to the miniature is the Prince's dress imitating the traditional attire of Armenian kings, with regard to its general design and colour. Similar representations of the royal garments, accurately conveying the precious, richly ornamented material of which they were made, frequently occur in Armenian miniatures and wall paintings from the tenth century onwards.�Porträttet visar det mest karaktäristiska tännetecknet hos den medeltida stilen: den strikta frontvyn hos figuren, den rigida resta attityden, den konventionella positionen hos armar och slutligen den schematiska behandlingen av ansiktet som är nästan ytterst utan några som helst portsättkaraktärer. Det enda elementet som skänker en viss grad av realism till miniatyren är prinsens dräkt, imiterande den traditionella klädseln av armeniska kungar, med avseende på dess allmänna design och färg. /mtd-dia-163-m.jpg "Although the artist's cognomen - Anetsi - indicates that his native town was Ani (the medieval capital of Armenia), his creative work did not owe much to his homeland. His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. Hans miniatyrer visar en stor del av persiskt inflytande: karaktärerna har runda rosenkindade ansikten, smala mandelformade ögon och bågformade ögonbryn. Deras kläder påminner om ljusfärgade orientaliska ämbetsdräkter fästa med en bältesgördel; även utsmyckningen hos ramverket, påminnande om persiskt kakel, har definitivt smak av Orienten.")

/mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. I sin helhet visar porträtten konstnärens försök att bryta med det rådande medeltida trenden av en schematisk behandling av karaktärer, avbildande istället en konkret person. Porträtten, som överensstämmer med en existerande beskrivning av forskarens utseende, var vid sin tid ansedd som en mycket autentisk likhet, målad från det verkliga. The artist chooses a laconic version of the scene based on an archaic iconographic canon.
