/mtd-cil-129-m.jpg "The miniature conveys a feeling of anxiety and apprehension as reflected in the gestures of the archangel, in the general rhythm of forms, and in the spatial arrangement and colouring. The latter is rich and varied, and the colours are applied in a carpet-like fashion, leaving very little room for gold. Even though the paint layer is not in a very good state of preservation, most of the blues being altogether lost, the colouring of the miniature retains its expressiveness. As elsewhere in this manuscript, the artist uses here his favourite quiet reddish tints, effectively set off by occasional patches of dark red. In so far as iconography is concerned the miniature deviates in some ways from traditional models. Thus, the scroll of parchment in the archangel's hand (instead of the more customary staff) and the crown on the Virgin's head are unusual for Armenian Gospel manuscripts and are due, according to S. Der Nersessian, to the influence of Western European art.�Miniatyren förmedlar en känsla av ångest och ängslan som reflekteras i ärkeängelns kroppshållning, i formernas allmänna rytm och i det spatiall arrangemanget och färgsättningen. Den senare är rik och variernade och färgerna är applicerade i ett mattliknande sätt och lämnar väldigt litet utrymme för guld. Även om färglagret inte är i så gott skick, det mesta av den blåa färgen borta, bibehåller färgsättningen hos miniatyren sin uttryckfullhet. Så som andra platser, använder konstnären här sin favorit, mjuka röda toner, effektivt framhävt av enstaka bitar av mörkröd. Vad det beträffar ikonografin, skiljer sig miniatyren i vissa ställen från det traditionella modellerna. Contrary to the predominant iconographic convention the Infant Christ is depicted as stepping forward to meet St. Simeon. A similar archaic treatment is to be found in a carved ivory diptych dating from the seventh or eighth century in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The ornamentation decorating the pillars and the dome of the temple plays a key role in the miniature.�De tolv rapphönsen som krönar templet symboliserar apostlarna. Here, the ornamental patterns decorate not only the background and the architectural details, but also the Evangelist's robes. The picture resembles a carpet, and this visual effect is further enhanced by the ornamental bands added to the frame and creating the impression of a carpet fringe.�Utsmyckningen spelar en ledande roll i illustartionen av detta manuskript, som även är ett framstående exemplar även bland illustrerade miniatyrer. Här, dekorerar de utsmyckande mönstren inte bara bakgrunden och bidrar med arkitektoniska detaljer, utan dekorerar även evangelisternas skrud. The miniature is particularly remarkable for its rich colouring, dominated by saturated blues and violets.<br>The lower frame contains an inscription by the illustrator, with his name unfortunately thoroughly rubbed out - probably by the other of the two artists, who did not want to share the credit for the work with a rival master.�De storskaliga monumentala figurerna hos Jungfrun och Gabriel visas mot bakgrunden av en blek grön vägg och en mörkblå himmel - en typ av bakgrund som är ofta förekommande i verk av krimiska minityrmålare. Målningen av utan tvekan gjord av en högst skicklig mästare som hade en perfekt kontroll över figurritning och begåvad i modellering av detaljer. Miniatyren är i synnerhet utomordentlig för dess rika färgsättning, dominerad av mättade blåa och lila färger. Den undre delen innehåller en inskription av illustratören, med hans namn som är olyckligt nog helt utsuddat - förmodligen av en av de andra konstnärerna som inte ville dela äran för verket med en rivaliserande mästare.<br><br>")

The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

Canonical motifs are treated by the artist as if seen through the eyes of common people; here this tendency shows in the slightly naive manner in which the righteous are opposed to the sinners.�Ovsian är en typisk representant för den \"populära treden\" i vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. I hans miniatyrer, tolkas de arkaiska modellerna med en sällsynt ärlighet och spontanitet.
